Area and thickness
Tarmac is priced by area, and the thickness of the layers affects cost. A domestic drive is normally laid as a binder course and a wearing course on a compacted base.
Base work
A solid base prevents sinking and cracking. If the existing surface must be dug out, or the ground is soft, there is extra excavation and stone.
Edgings and kerbs
Edging holds the surface in. Kerbs, block borders and drainage channels add to the cost and improve the finish.
Drainage
Tarmac is not permeable, so water has to be dealt with. Falls, drains and soakaways may be needed, which affects the price. See driveway drainage.
Access and waste
Large lorries and rollers need room. Tight access, the removal of old surface and waste disposal all add to the cost.
Comparing quotes
Ask for the area, depth of each layer, base specification, edgings, drainage and waste in writing. We provide a free written quote with each item set out. See tarmac driveways.

When can I use a new tarmac driveway?
Foot traffic is usually possible soon after laying, but vehicles should wait until it has hardened. We advise on timings.
