Gravel Driveways across London
Loose gravel on its own tends to rut, spread and migrate onto the road. A well-built gravel driveway uses a compacted base, a geotextile membrane, plastic or similar stabilising grids to hold the stone, and solid edging to keep it in.
Gravel is permeable, so it is a straightforward way to meet the front garden drainage rules. It suits period houses, longer drives and anyone who likes a crunch underfoot. See our gravel driveway ideas for colours and combinations.

Why people choose gravel
- Permeable, so rain drains into the ground naturally
- A traditional look that suits period and country-style homes
- Good value and quick to install
- Many colours and stone sizes to match the property
- Easy to top up or refresh later

How we build a gravel driveway
We remove the old surface, dig out to depth and lay a compacted, free-draining sub-base. A membrane goes over it to stop weeds and separate the layers. Stabilising grids are laid and filled with gravel so the stone locks in rather than rolling around.
We finish with solid edging or kerbs, plus a firm area or apron where the drive meets the road so stones do not spread. We recommend a stone size and colour suited to the property and to how you will use the drive.
How it works
Choose the stone
We help you choose the gravel type, size and colour and agree the layout.
Excavate and build the base
We dig out, lay a free-draining base and compact it.
Membrane and grids
We lay the membrane and stabilising grids, then fit edging.
Fill and finish
We fill the grids with gravel, rake level and leave the site clean.
Not sure which surface suits your property?
Resin, tarmac, block paving or stone: each has strengths. Tell us about your space and budget and we will recommend the right one and quote for it in writing.
Is gravel right for my driveway?
Gravel works best on level or gently sloping ground. It is not the ideal choice for steep drives, wheelchair access, pushchairs or anywhere noise matters. For a smoother permeable option, see resin bound driveways. For a patterned and permeable option, see permeable paving.
What affects the cost?
The cost of a gravel driveway depends on the area, the depth of excavation, the grid system, the edging and the stone you choose. We give a free written quote after we have measured up.

Gravel Driveways FAQs
Does gravel need maintenance?
A little. Raking keeps it level and occasional top-ups replace stone that gets lost. Grids reduce the amount of raking needed.
Will weeds grow through it?
A membrane and a good depth of stone make it difficult. Weeds can still take root in debris on top, so a quick weed now and then helps.
Is gravel good for security?
Many people like the crunch of gravel as a deterrent, and it is easy to combine with gates and lighting.
Can I park heavy vehicles on it?
A properly built gravel drive with a solid base and grids copes with normal cars and vans. Heavy or frequent loads may call for another surface.
