Resin Bound Driveways across London

In a resin bound system the stone is mixed with resin before it is laid, so every piece is coated and held in place. The finished layer is a few centimetres thick, smooth underfoot, and has tiny voids that let rainwater pass through to the base below.

That permeability matters in London, where front gardens are small and surface water is a real concern. A correctly built resin bound driveway is generally regarded as a permeable surface for planning purposes, but only when the base underneath is permeable too, which is why the groundwork is as important as the finish.

How we lay resin bound

We prepare the base to suit the surface: an open-graded, porous sub-base for a fully permeable system, or an existing sound base where that is suitable. Edges are formed with kerbs or a stable edge detail so the resin does not break away.

Then comes the laying. Resin and aggregate are mixed in a forced-action mixer and trowelled to an even thickness by hand. It must be laid in dry weather above a minimum temperature, so we plan around the forecast and keep the area protected while it cures.

How it works

Choose the stone

We show you aggregate and colour samples and agree the pattern and edge details.

Prepare the base

We build or repair the base and set levels, falls and edging.

Trowel the surface

Batches are mixed and trowelled to a smooth, even finish in dry weather.

Cure and use

We keep the surface free from traffic until it has cured, then hand over with aftercare advice.

Not sure which surface suits your property?

Resin, tarmac, block paving or stone: each has strengths. Tell us about your space and budget and we will recommend the right one and quote for it in writing.

Is resin bound right for my driveway?

Resin bound suits most front gardens, especially where a smooth surface and good drainage matter. It is less suited to a base that moves, a drive with heavy standing water or a site that is wet and shaded for long periods without a drainage plan. We will tell you honestly if another surface would work better. See resin bonded driveways, tarmac or block paving.

What affects the cost?

Resin bound is priced per square metre, and the final price depends on the base work needed, the stone, the area, the access and how many edges and details there are. Our resin driveway cost guide explains what drives the price, and a free written quote gives you a firm figure.

Resin Bound Driveways FAQs

Is resin bound permeable?

The resin bound layer is porous, and it drains well when it sits on a permeable base. We design the base and fall so water has somewhere to go.

Will it crack?

Cracks usually come from movement in the base below. A properly prepared and compacted base reduces the risk. We inspect any existing surface carefully before laying over it.

How long before I can drive on it?

Resin needs time to cure, and this varies with temperature and weather. We tell you when it is safe to walk and drive on it, usually after a day or more.

Can weeds grow through it?

Weeds are unlikely to grow through a well-laid resin bound surface, though seeds can sometimes settle in debris on top. A brush and occasional wash keeps it clear.
