Driveway Drainage across London
Water that has nowhere to go ruins paving, tarmac and resin faster than traffic does. Good drainage starts with the falls: a slight slope that carries water away from the house. Where the ground cannot take the water naturally, we add channel drains, gullies or a soakaway.
Drainage is also a planning issue. In England, a hard surface over 5 square metres in a front garden needs permission unless it is permeable or drains to a lawn or border within the property. We design a solution that meets the rules, from permeable construction to a properly sized drain.

Signs your driveway has a drainage problem
- Puddles that stand on the surface for hours or days after rain
- Water running towards the house, garage or neighbour’s property
- Ice patches in winter where water has pooled
- Moss, algae and staining in low spots
- Surface breakdown, sunken areas or washed-out joints

How we fix drainage
We look at where water comes from and where it can go. The answer may be re-grading a surface, adding a linear channel drain at the threshold of the garage or house, a gully connected to a suitable outlet, or a soakaway sized to the area and ground.
We install drainage as part of a new driveway or retrofit it to an existing one. Where a connection to the public sewer or highway drain is involved, we explain what permissions apply before quoting.
How it works
Assess the problem
We check levels, the ground and where water collects.
Design the solution
We agree the right mix of falls, channels and soakaways.
Install
We excavate, install the drainage and reinstate the surface.
Test and hand over
We check flow and explain how to keep drains clear.
Not sure which surface suits your property?
Resin, tarmac, block paving or stone: each has strengths. Tell us about your space and budget and we will recommend the right one and quote for it in writing.
Channel drain, soakaway or permeable surface?
A channel drain catches water at a particular point. A soakaway lets it disperse into the ground, but only works where the ground drains well, which London clay often does not. A permeable surface avoids the need for either in many cases. We recommend the simplest solution that works.
What affects the cost?
The cost depends on the type of drainage, the length and depth of the excavation, the outlet, and how much of the surface has to be reinstated. We give a free written quote after inspecting the site.

Driveway Drainage FAQs
Do I need a soakaway?
Not always. It depends on the area, the ground and whether the surface is permeable. We assess each site.
Can you add drainage to an existing driveway?
Yes. We can cut in channel drains or re-grade a surface, and reinstate it neatly.
Can I connect to the public drain?
Often not for surface water from a driveway. We explain the rules and alternatives for your property.
Will drainage stop my driveway flooding?
Good drainage greatly reduces standing water. Severe flooding may have other causes, which we help you identify.
