Dropped Kerbs across London

A dropped kerb is a lowered section of kerb and strengthened footway that lets a vehicle cross the pavement. It is the responsibility of the highway authority, usually your borough council, and you normally have to apply and pay a fee. In some cases the work to the public footway has to be done by a council-approved contractor.

Rules differ between London boroughs, and Transport for London controls red routes. Some properties, such as flats and some conservation areas, may have restrictions. We explain what applies and help you plan the driveway so it fits the council’s requirements.

When you need a dropped kerb

  • You are creating a new driveway where there is no existing crossover
  • Your existing dropped kerb is narrow or in the wrong place for a new drive
  • You are widening a driveway and the kerb needs extending
  • You want to park off-road in a front garden
  • The kerb or footway in front of your drive is damaged

How we help with a dropped kerb

We measure the frontage and tell you whether a crossover is likely to be permitted, what width and layout the council normally requires and what has to be in place, such as a minimum driveway depth. We explain the application process and what you pay the council.

Where you have approval, we build the driveway to meet the crossover correctly, with the right levels, drainage and edging. If the council requires its own or an approved contractor for the footway, we plan around that so the work fits together.

How it works

Check the site

We check the frontage, road type and whether a crossover is likely to be allowed.

Apply to the council

You apply to your council; we explain what is needed and help with the plan.

Crossover works

The footway works are carried out as the council requires.

Build the driveway

We build the driveway to meet the crossover correctly.

Not sure which surface suits your property?

Resin, tarmac, block paving or stone: each has strengths. Tell us about your space and budget and we will recommend the right one and quote for it in writing.

Planning permission and dropped kerbs

If your property fronts a classified road, you may also need planning permission for the new access. Separate from that, the front garden hard surface rules apply to the driveway itself. Our planning guide explains the main points. Always confirm requirements with your council before work starts.

What affects the cost?

The cost has two parts: the council’s fees and the crossover works, which vary by borough, and the cost of the driveway itself. We give a free written quote for the driveway and explain what the council will charge so you can budget properly.

Dropped Kerbs FAQs

How long does a dropped kerb take to get approved?

It varies by council and can take several weeks. We advise you to apply before booking the driveway work.

Can I just drive over the pavement without one?

No. Driving over a pavement without an approved crossover can damage it and may be an offence. A drive without a dropped kerb is not a usable parking space.

Can I have a dropped kerb if I live in a flat?

Often not, because flats and maisonettes do not have the same permitted development rights and the frontage is usually shared. Check with your council.

Do you carry out the kerb work yourselves?

It depends on your borough. Many councils require approved contractors for work on the public highway. We tell you what applies to your address.
