Block Paving Driveways across London
Block paving is made up of individual concrete or clay blocks laid in a pattern, such as herringbone or stretcher bond, over a compacted sub-base and a bedding layer. The interlock between the blocks, held in by edging, is what gives it strength.
It suits many London homes because it looks right on both period and modern properties, and any damaged area can be lifted and relaid without replacing the whole drive. We can also build it as permeable paving so rainwater drains through the joints.

Why people choose block paving
- A smart, patterned finish with many colours and styles to choose from
- Strong under cars and capable of being repaired locally
- Available in permeable form to support drainage
- Easy to add borders, decorative inlays and different patterns
- Stays looking good with simple cleaning and occasional re-sanding

How we lay block paving
We dig out, lay and compact a sub-base in layers, set an even bedding layer and fit solid edge restraints, because without them blocks creep apart. Blocks are laid in the chosen pattern, cut neatly at edges, compacted with a plate compactor and brushed in with jointing sand.
For permeable construction we use an open-graded base and joint material and specify blocks designed for it. We can seal the finished surface if you want to protect the colour, hold the sand in and make cleaning easier. See paving sealing.
How it works
Choose the blocks
We discuss colours, patterns and borders and agree the layout.
Build the base
We excavate, lay and compact the sub-base and set edge restraints and levels.
Lay and compact
We lay the pattern, cut neatly at edges, then compact and joint the surface.
Finish and advise
We clear up and explain cleaning, re-sanding and optional sealing.
Not sure which surface suits your property?
Resin, tarmac, block paving or stone: each has strengths. Tell us about your space and budget and we will recommend the right one and quote for it in writing.
Block paving or something else?
Block paving needs a little more upkeep than tarmac or resin, mainly weeding, cleaning and topping up the joint sand. In return you get a pattern, easy repairs and a finish that suits many properties. See resin bound for a smoother option or imprinted concrete for a stamped finish.
What affects the cost?
The price depends on the blocks, the pattern, the area, the depth of excavation, the edging and whether the drive is permeable. Patterns with more cuts take longer to lay. We give a free written quote after measuring up.

Block Paving Driveways FAQs
Does block paving sink?
Sinking is almost always caused by a poor or too-thin base, or by missing edge restraints. We build the base in compacted layers and fit solid edging to avoid it. See paving repairs if an existing drive has sunk.
Can weeds grow between the blocks?
They can if the joints are not kept full of sand. Regular brushing, re-sanding and sealing help. Polymeric jointing sand can also reduce weed growth.
Is block paving slippery?
Textured blocks give good grip. Moss and algae can make any paved surface slippery when damp, so cleaning matters in shaded areas.
Can you match existing block paving?
We can often match blocks or use a border or contrasting pattern for an extension. Colours can weather, so we explain the options on site.
