Tarmac Driveways across London
Tarmac, or asphalt, is a mix of stone and bitumen laid hot and rolled to a dense, hard surface. It suits larger drives and shared access, copes well with heavy vehicles and goes down quickly, often in a day once the base is prepared.
A tarmac driveway is only as good as what is underneath it. Most breakdowns we are asked to repair are down to a thin base, poor drainage or loose edges, so we build the sub-base properly and fit edging before the surface goes on. See our tarmac driveway cost guide.

Why people choose tarmac
- Excellent value compared with most decorative surfaces
- Very durable and suitable for heavy vehicles and larger areas
- Quick to install once the base is ready
- Easy to repair and to refresh with a new wearing course later
- A clean, uniform finish that suits many properties

How we lay a tarmac driveway
We excavate to depth, install a compacted stone sub-base and form the edges with kerbs or edging. For a traditional two-layer construction, a binder course goes down first, followed by a finer wearing course, each rolled while hot.
We work to falls that take water away from the house and towards a drain or soakaway. Where drainage cannot be solved on-site, we tell you before we quote rather than after.
How it works
Measure and plan
We measure, check levels, drainage and access and agree the finish and any edging.
Dig and build the base
We excavate, lay and compact the sub-base and set the edges.
Lay the tarmac
We lay and roll the tarmac in the right conditions to a dense, even surface.
Clear and advise
We clear the site and tell you when you can walk and drive on the new surface.
Not sure which surface suits your property?
Resin, tarmac, block paving or stone: each has strengths. Tell us about your space and budget and we will recommend the right one and quote for it in writing.
Should I choose tarmac?
Tarmac suits you if you want durability and value more than a decorative look. It is not permeable by default, so a front garden over 5 square metres needs a drainage plan or a permeable construction to meet the planning rules. If appearance and permeability matter more, consider resin bound or block paving. Our guide to driveway materials compared helps.
What affects the cost?
Tarmac is priced by the square metre and by the depth of construction. The base work, area, access, edging and whether we are removing an old surface all change the price. See our tarmac driveway cost guide and ask for a free written quote.

Tarmac Driveways FAQs
How long will tarmac last?
With a sound base and good drainage, tarmac can last for many years. Its life depends on the quality of the base, traffic and maintenance.
Can you lay tarmac over my old driveway?
In some cases, yes. If the old surface is sound and well drained, a new layer can go over it. If it is cracked, sunken or moving, we recommend repairs or a new base first.
Does tarmac need sealing?
Not routinely, but sealing can help refresh the look and protect against fuel and oil spills. We can tell you what is suitable for your driveway.
Will it get soft in hot weather?
Tarmac can soften slightly in very hot weather. A properly specified mix and construction copes well with normal UK summers.
