A home charger is a good reason to rethink your driveway. A little planning saves digging up new paving later.

Where to put it

Close to the parking space, near the power supply, and where the cable will not cross a path. The charge point itself is installed by an electrician.

Ducting

If the charger is away from the house, a cable run is needed. Laying duct before the surface goes down avoids cutting into new paving.

Power

The supply, consumer unit and earthing must be assessed by a qualified electrician.

Keeping it safe

Cables must not run across the pavement, which is a trip hazard and a legal issue.

Rules and permission

Charge points usually do not need planning permission, but conservation areas and listed buildings differ. Check with your council. See driveway installation.
