The height rule

In England, gates, fences and walls next to a highway used by vehicles can generally be up to 1 metre high without permission. Elsewhere on the property, 2 metres is the usual limit. Check for your property.

Conservation areas and listed buildings

Extra restrictions often apply, and listed building consent may be needed.

Flats and removed rights

Flats, maisonettes and homes where permitted development rights have been removed need permission.

Opening over the pavement

Gates should not open outwards over the pavement or road. That creates a hazard and can break highway rules.

Check first

Ask your council before you buy. This is general guidance, not legal advice. See driveway gates.
