Gravel

Often the lowest-cost surface. It is permeable and quick to lay, but needs a membrane and grid to stop the stones moving, and it is harder to walk or wheel across. See gravel driveways.

Tarmac

Practical and economical for most drives, and a good choice where budget matters. It looks plain, but a neat edge helps. See tarmac driveways.

Concrete

Can be economical and strong, but needs drainage planning and is difficult to repair. See concrete driveways.

Resin-bonded

Cheaper than resin-bound and quick to lay, but less durable and generally not permeable. See resin-bonded driveways.

Where not to save

Do not skimp on the base, the edging or drainage. These are the hidden parts that decide whether the driveway lasts.

Keep the cost down sensibly

Keep the shape simple, choose a standard finish, reuse a sound base where possible and ask for options in your quote.
