Electric vs Manual Driveway Gates
Gates add security and kerb appeal, but automation changes the cost and the planning. Here is how to choose.
- Free written quotes, no obligation
- Driveways and paving across all of London
- Clear pricing and tidy, careful crews

Manual gates
Simple, reliable and lower cost, but you have to get out of the car to open them.
Electric gates
Open with a remote, keypad or intercom. They add convenience and security but need power, safety features and servicing.
Swing or sliding
Swing gates need room to open. Sliding gates suit tight frontages but need space to slide.
Safety
Automatic gates should have safety sensors and a manual release. Installation should follow current safety guidance.
Power and running costs
Electric gates need a power supply, which affects groundwork. Plan cabling before the driveway is laid. See driveway gates.

Electric vs Manual Driveway Gates: FAQs
What happens in a power cut?
Gates should have a manual release or battery backup.
Do I need planning permission?
Often not, but height limits apply. See the gates planning guide.
Can I automate manual gates later?
Sometimes. Ducting in the groundwork makes it easier.
