The usual timeline
A typical front driveway takes a few working days from digging out to the final finish. Larger drives, difficult access, drainage work or a dropped kerb can add time. We give you a start date and an expected duration in the quote.
Digging out and the base
Taking up the old surface, excavating, building the sub-base and fitting edging usually takes the first part of the job. It is the stage that should not be rushed.
Waiting times by surface
Block paving and gravel can usually be used straight away. Tarmac is typically walkable within hours but best left alone for a day or two for cars. Resin needs time to cure, and concrete needs several days before vehicles. Your contractor should tell you exactly how long for your job.
Weather
Rain and cold hold up resin, tarmac and concrete. Good contractors move the date rather than lay in poor conditions. See the best time of year to lay a driveway.
Planning around the work
Move vehicles out before the start date and tell neighbours if access will be blocked. If parking bays or a skip need a permit, we help you arrange it.

How Long Does It Take to Install a Driveway?: FAQs
Can I use my driveway the same day?
Only with some surfaces, such as block paving or gravel. Resin, tarmac and concrete need curing time first.
Will I be without parking?
Yes, for the length of the job. We tell you in advance so you can find street parking or a permit.
Does a dropped kerb add time?
It can, because the council must approve it and the crossing is built by approved contractors. See dropped kerbs.
