A weak sub-base
If the stone sub-base was too thin or not compacted, it settles under load, and the blocks follow.
Bedding sand problems
A bedding layer that is too thick, uneven or washed out leaves voids under the blocks.
Edge failure
Without strong edging, the blocks spread and the surface loosens.
Water and drains
Leaking pipes, poor falls or a soakaway that is full can wash material from beneath. Tree roots can lift and shift areas.
