Indian Sandstone Paving across London

Sandstone paving is cut and sold in riven or sawn finishes, in colours from buff and grey to rustic multi shades. Each slab is slightly different, which gives a patio character and a natural look.

It can be a very good-value way to get natural stone, but it is porous and can stain or weather, so laying and aftercare matter. We lay on a full mortar bed with accurate levels and suitable jointing, and we advise on sealing.

Why people choose Indian sandstone

  • A natural look with colour variation between slabs
  • A textured, non-slip surface when laid correctly
  • A wide choice of colours and finishes
  • Good value compared with many natural stones
  • Suits both period and contemporary gardens

How we lay Indian sandstone

We excavate and build a compacted sub-base, then lay each slab on a full mortar bed, checking levels as we go. Blending slabs from several packs helps avoid patches of colour. Joints are pointed with a suitable mortar or jointing compound.

We clean off residue after laying and discuss sealing, which can protect against stains and make cleaning easier. Falls are built in so water runs away from the house.

How it works

Choose the stone

We show samples, agree colour, finish and layout.

Prepare the base

We excavate, build the sub-base and set levels and falls.

Lay and point

We lay slabs on a full bed, cut neatly and point the joints.

Clean and seal

We clean the surface and advise on sealing and care.

Not sure which surface suits your property?

Resin, tarmac, block paving or stone: each has strengths. Tell us about your space and budget and we will recommend the right one and quote for it in writing.

Sandstone or porcelain?

Sandstone is natural and textured, but it can stain and weather and needs more care. Porcelain is more uniform and low maintenance. See porcelain paving. For a patterned and repairable surface see block paving.

What affects the cost?

The cost depends on the stone and finish, the area, the base and the layout. We give a free written quote after measuring up.

Indian Sandstone Paving FAQs

Does Indian sandstone stain?

It is porous, so it can stain from oil, wine or leaves. Sealing and prompt cleaning of spills help.

Does it fade?

Some stones lighten in sunlight and darken in shade over time. We explain what to expect when choosing.

Does it need sealing?

Sealing is optional but recommended on many patios, particularly those under trees or used for dining. We can advise stone by stone.

Is it slippery in the wet?

Riven finishes give good grip. Algae can make any stone slippery in shade, so cleaning helps.
