How each is made
Resin-bound surfaces mix stone and resin together and trowel the mixture level, leaving a smooth, porous finish. Resin-bonded surfaces spread a layer of resin onto the base and scatter stone over the top, leaving a loose, textured finish.
Drainage
Resin-bound is porous and can allow water to pass through when laid on a permeable base, which helps with the front garden rules. Resin-bonded is generally not permeable, so drainage must be designed separately.
Appearance and feel
Resin-bound looks smooth and seamless and is comfortable to walk and wheel on. Resin-bonded is rougher and can shed some stones over time, particularly on drives with heavy turning.
Cost and time
Resin-bonded is usually quicker and less expensive. Resin-bound costs more because it uses more material and needs more skill, but it tends to look better and last longer.
Which should you choose?
For most front driveways where looks and drainage matter, resin-bound is the better choice. Resin-bonded can suit lower-budget schemes, paths and areas that do not need to be permeable. See resin-bound driveways and resin-bonded driveways.

Resin-Bound vs Resin-Bonded: FAQs
Can resin go over my existing driveway?
Sometimes, if the existing surface is sound, level and suitable. We assess the base before we quote.
Does resin need maintenance?
It needs occasional sweeping and cleaning. See cleaning.
Does resin crack?
Resin laid on a poor base can crack. A sound, well-prepared base is the best protection.
