Typical lifespan

A properly laid tarmac driveway commonly lasts around fifteen to twenty years or more, depending on traffic, ground conditions and upkeep. Surface wear shows first, and the surface can often be renewed without rebuilding.

Base and thickness

A compacted sub-base and the right thickness of binder and wearing course are what keep tarmac from cracking. Thin layers over a weak base fail early, especially where vehicles turn.

Edges and drainage

Tarmac breaks down first at unsupported edges and where water sits. Good edging and falls that shed water extend the life of the surface.

Sun, frost and oil

Hot weather can soften tarmac, and frost can open cracks. Oil and fuel dissolve the binder, so clean spills quickly.

Repair or replace

Small cracks and potholes can be repaired. Widespread cracking, sinking or crumbling usually means resurfacing or relaying. See how to repair tarmac.

How Long Does a Tarmac Driveway Last?: FAQs

Can tarmac be laid over old tarmac?

Sometimes. If the existing surface is sound, a new wearing course can be laid over it. We check before we quote.

Does tarmac fade?

Black tarmac can turn grey as the binder weathers. Sealing can restore the colour.

Is tarmac good for steep drives?

Yes, it gives good grip when laid and finished correctly.
