How it works

Blocks are laid on a bed of sharp sand over a compacted stone sub-base, held in by edge restraints and locked together with sand in the joints.

Types of block

Concrete blocks are the most common and come in many colours. Clay and natural stone setts cost more and age differently.

Pros

Strong and flexible, repairable block by block, and available in many colours and patterns. Permeable versions are available.

Cons

Needs a good base, can sink if badly laid, and can attract weeds and moss in the joints without upkeep.

Where it suits

Driveways, patios and paths. See block paving driveways and block paving.
