What it is

It is a strengthened section of pavement and a lowered kerb where your driveway meets the road. The pavement is built to carry the weight of vehicles.

Why you need one

Driving across a standard pavement and kerb damages them and can be an offence. If you want to park in your front garden, you need a dropped kerb approved by your council.

Who builds it

The work must usually be done by contractors approved by the council or highway authority. You cannot normally build it yourself.

When you might be refused

Councils may refuse where there are street trees, lamp columns, bus stops, junctions, visibility problems, controlled parking bays or where the property is not suitable.

What Is a Dropped Kerb and Do I Need One?: FAQs

Is a dropped kerb the same as planning permission?

No. Planning rules cover the surface of your front garden. A dropped kerb is a separate approval for the pavement.

Do flats need dropped kerbs?

If you have your own parking space, possibly, but flats often have restrictions. Check with your council and your lease.

Can I have two?

Rules vary by council, and a second crossing is often not allowed.
