What Is Permeable Paving and Do I Need It?
Permeable paving lets rainwater soak through rather than run off. It is one of the simplest ways to meet the front garden rules.

How it works
Rain passes through gaps or pores in the surface into a layer of clean stone beneath, which stores the water and releases it slowly into the ground or a drain.
Surfaces that can be permeable
Resin-bound on a permeable base, block paving with open joints, gravel with grids and some porous tarmac can all work. The construction underneath matters as much as the top surface.
The front garden rule
In England, paving more than 5 square metres of a front garden with an impermeable surface needs planning permission unless the water drains to a lawn or border in the property. Permeable surfaces avoid the issue. See planning permission for a driveway.
London ground
Clay soils drain slowly, so many London drives need an overflow to a soakaway or drain. We check the ground and design the drainage to suit.
Looking after it
Keep the surface clear of silt and debris so it keeps draining. See permeable paving.

What Is Permeable Paving and Do I Need It?: FAQs
Is permeable paving more expensive?
The deeper base can cost more, but it can save the cost of a planning application or separate drainage.
Does it flood in heavy rain?
It can cope with heavy rain when designed properly, with an overflow for extreme storms.
Will weeds grow in it?
Joints can collect weeds if neglected. Regular sweeping helps.
